This clock is based on an old idea of mine that I was reminded of after reading Seneca's “On the Shortness of Life”. Traditional Ash Wednesday liturgies focus on the shortness of life and remind us that we come from dust and will return back to the earth, dust once more. I'm not well-read in the classics, but a few pieces have been important sources of meaning to me over the years--most notably Marcus Aurelius's Meditations. No shortness of innovative procedures in the medical field. When you really think about it, life is extremely short relatively to how long the world has been around. It is not that we have a short space of time, but that we waste much of it.
